Hats Off to the Fourth Grade Crafters!

A student modeling the first hat for our project, created using a hatloom …and made the scarf by using her hand as a loom!

In the spirit of DIY, unstructured hands-on projects, and Maker Spaces, we will be starting a Crafternoon at the Melrose library as an after school program. Various looms, wool and tools will be provided, and students will be free to make and create projects of their choice. We are hoping that the project will last long enough for us to make hats for ourselves, and hats and scarves to donate to charities that help provide warm clothing to people in need.  One of our experienced loomers has donated three hats and a scarf (see photos above and below). Thank you!!!!!IMG_2101

Both boys and girls have already asked to use the looms and wool and are eagerly starting to make beautiful and useful creations.  Some students will continue to work on their projects at home. Mrs. Casey will try to craft her first hat over the Thanksgiving break. Many of the students are way ahead of her! For more information on crafting and makerspaces in libraries read this article in School Library Journal.

NOTE TO CRAFTERS:

Many of you have asked where I bought the supplies. Three stores, A.C. Moore, Michaels, and Jo-Ann Fabrics have these materials.

Some students wondered how  to know the correct hat size for various head sizes. LoomaHat.com has useful tutorials and pages that offer size charts, patterns, written and text tutorials.

Please share any good informational sites or books if you come across any in your research.
